Pedestrians are at risk for severe personal injury in an accident

Any accident involving a motor vehicle has the potential to cause serious injuries. When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, however, the results are often catastrophic. The possibility of suffering a long-term personal injury is always a concern, especially in the large urban centres of Ontario.

The city of Toronto published a study in 2015 that revealed data gathered between 2008 and 2012 about pedestrian accidents. During that time, around 10,000 men, women and children were killed or injured walking on the streets of Toronto in accidents with motor vehicles. Approximately 9 percent of the injuries were categorized as major. Driver error was cited as the cause of the accidents 67 percent of the time.

One accident not in the study happened in Mar. 2014. A young woman was struck by a turning vehicle as she crossed the road at a crosswalk. Her injuries, including a head injury, a fractured rib and a torn ligament, left her unable to walk for a month. She still visits a chiropractor, goes for massage therapy, and has been diagnosed with PTSD. Her case has not yet been settled.

One Ontario doctor reports that pedestrian-and-vehicle accidents frequently cause injuries to the head, organs and bones. Injuries like these can lead to ongoing difficulties, sometimes for years after an accident. Continuing with treatments can be costly and time-consuming, and compensation may be of great benefit to anyone who has suffered a serious personal injury in an accident. In order to have the best chance of receiving compensation, it may be prudent to seek representation by an experienced lawyer.
