Though bicycling in a major city can often be the fastest and greenest way from place to place, it is not without an element of risk. A bike offers no protection in the event of an accident and leaves the rider open to a severe personal injury. One Ontario woman was lucky to survive after a collision with a large vehicle left her lying hurt in the street.
The woman was cycling to work via a bike lane in downtown Toronto. As she crossed an intersection, a garbage truck turned the corner in front of her, cutting her off. Though she attempted an evasive manoeuvre, she was unable to avoid being struck by the vehicle. She was knocked down, and the rear wheels of the truck ran her over.
Her pelvis was crushed in the accident, plus she suffered from severe soft tissue damage and a variety of cuts and punctures. Doctors estimated her chance of survival at 30 percent. Remarkably, she survived — but not without a lot of medical help. Bolts and a stabilizer held her pelvis together for four months, and she underwent extensive physiotherapy. She also underwent therapy for post-traumatic stress.
The road to recovery can be long and trying after suffering in an accident caused by the negligence of another.
