Pharmaceutical Liability Archives

Pharmaceutical liability: Health Canada wants codeine off shelves

Nonprescription codeine is readily available on shelves at pharmacies and most grocery stores in Canada. If Health Canada has anything to say about it, that will be changing in the near future. These sorts of products have been associated with pharmaceutical liability lawsuits across the country. Codeine can be found in many products, including pain medication and cough syrups. Health Canada is promising to make them available by a doctor's prescription only.

Ontario pharmaceutical liability and the dark side of Tylenol 3

When people get sick, they believe over-the-counter drugs or those prescribed to them will help them to feel better. But many Ontario residents get sick from what they can buy off the shelf or are prescribed and as such may be entitled to compensation by launching a pharmaceutical liability case against the company who manufactures the drug. There have been many reports of people becoming sick from taking Tylenol 3 manufactured in Canada by Johnson & Johnson.

Hydroxycut recalled after injuries and one death

Hydroxycut was popular in Canada before the 2009 recall, with millions of units sold. The companies that produced it, Health Sciences Inc. and Muscletech Research and Development Inc., marketed it as a drug that could be used for weight loss. It is, in actuality, an herbal supplement. It is made with green tea extract.

Why was the Vioxx settlement approved?

In 2013, a settlement was approved for those who had used the painkiller Vioxx. It had only been sold until 2004, but it was found that those who used it had a higher risk of circulatory problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. These could cause serious injuries, lasting health issues and even death.

Breast-fed babies could be harmed by codeine

If you're breastfeeding your child, it's important to pay attention to what you put into your body at all times. Studies have shown that what you consume can be transferred to the child, and, when taking drugs and medications, this can be quite dangerous.

Arthritis sufferers were given compensation for using Bextra

Do you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, and did you use a drug called Bextra? Bextra is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug -- often referred to as a NSAID -- that developers said would cut back on stiffness, inflammation and overall pain caused by those conditions. In a smaller amount of cases, doctors also gave it out for those with painful menstruation issues.

Antacid drugs associated with dementia in elderly patients

The results from research done in Germany indicate that a widely used type of medicine for treating heartburn can significantly raise the risk of dementia in elderly patients. The research was featured in the medical journal JAMA Neurology published earlier this month.

How pharmaceutical liability can get very complicated

From the outside, it may appear that pharmaceutical liability is pretty clear-cut. If you take a drug that harms you and you weren't warned, you have a case. You can sue to get back money for medical treatment or compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages, and more.
